BEETROOT

What Season

beetroot will grow in any season
What season? Beetroot will pretty much grow in any season as it is frost resistant. Isn’t particularly fussy with soil. Neutral soil is best but it will cope with either. Beetroot likes well draining but moisture retentive soil.
Biennial: this means it will flower and go to seed in its second year. If you want to save the seed you will have to leave the beetroot in the ground for 2 years and then save the seed. Wait for the beetroot to flower then save the seed.

Sowing

Sow it were you grow it!
What soil? Isn’t particularly fussy with soil. Neutral soil is best but it will cope with either. Beetroot likes well draining but moisture retentive soil. Beetroot gains its size from soaking up water so plant it in particularly wet spots. You can also
  • Beetroot can be direct sown or grown in seed trays/modules/small pots. Beetroot seeds are quite big so dib a 2cm hole or a 2cm shallow trench. Lightly cover with soil and water. If sown in seed trays they will need daily watering in summer or watering every 2 days (whenever they look or feel dry is a better gage) Beetroot is usually planted in ‘nests’ or ‘multi sown’ this means that you put around 4 seeds in the same hole. Beetroot swells up to be huge; doing this prevents them from growing to Jurassic sizes. Sow every two weeks for a successional crop that's ready as and when you need it.
Everything you need

GROWING YOUR FIRST beetroot

  • Beetroot will usually germinate quite fast as the seeds are quite resilient.

  • You can harvest beet leaves whilst they are still growing without it making much difference to the root, just make sure you leave some leaves on there.

  • Harvest the biggest beetroot first

  • If you harvest the biggest first this means the smaller ones in the nest will have a chance to swell up.

  • Beetroot is only held in by thin hairlike roots. Pull the beetroot out and scrape the roots off with the back of a knife.

  • Beetroot stores well in cool dry environments and can be kept for a few months.
