COURGETTE

COURGETTE

What Season

Courgettes are traditionally a summer crop
What season? Grow courgettes in summer as they need a lot of daylight to produce the fruit. They don’t like the cold so plant them in a spot that has full coverage.
Grow courgettes to the size of marrows. Pick a successful plant. Scrape the seeds out of the marrow and clean thoroughly. Dry the seeds and remove any of the courgette gunk. Clean again if they need it. Store in a cool dark place.

Sowing

Sow it were you grow it!
Depending on the variety of courgettes you have you may be able to sow courgettes straight into medium sized pots, then re-plant in your planter once a few inches tall. If not then sow the seeds into a seed tray, the seeds are large so be sure to plant them relatively deep but don’t compact soil over the top. Water regularly.
  • Harvest the courgettes when they look the same size as the ones you’d buy in the supermarket. If you leave them to get bigger they produce seeds and become quite watery to taste. You can cut them at the base of the plant or just twist them off. A clean cut reduces the risk of disease. Courgettes will keep well if stored correctly.
Everything you need

GROWING YOUR FIRST courgette

  • Dig a hole bigger than you need.

  • Backfill with manure or well rotted organic matter.

  • Plant the courgette plant, & fill with soil.

  • leave 90cm spacing if planting a few plants.

  • Courgettes will benefit from a liquid feed every few weeks.

  • Remove old leaves as new leaves appear.

  • Courgettes get mildew easily if you spot it and remove the leaves before it spreads to the fruit.

  • When courgettes are resting on the ground they sometimes go mouldy.

  • You can put straw around the plant to stop this.
