Ynystawe Primary School – Cooking with Homegrown Ingredients

The final visit to Ynystawe Primary School was a true celebration of the work the students had put into their planters. With their vegetables and herbs beginning to grow, it was time to bring their efforts full circle with a fun and educational cooking workshop!

Led by the Room 2 Grow Wales team, the session introduced students to simple and delicious recipes that could be made using homegrown produce. The children were excited to learn how the ingredients they had nurtured could be transformed into healthy meals. They chopped, mixed, and cooked, creating a variety of dishes that showcased fresh, seasonal flavors.

One of the highlights was making herb-infused flatbreads and a fresh vegetable salad using some of the herbs from their planters. As they cooked, the children discussed the benefits of eating fresh, locally grown food and how cooking can be a creative and enjoyable process.

This final workshop truly brought the project full circle, showing students the rewarding outcome of their hard work. It reinforced the idea that growing food isn’t just about gardening—it’s about sustainability, health, and community. As they enjoyed their homemade meals, the students reflected on the journey they had taken, from building the planters to learning about permaculture and finally cooking with their harvest.

Room 2 Grow Wales’ collaboration with these three schools has left a lasting impact, inspiring the next generation to embrace sustainable living and take pride in growing and cooking their own food.
