What Season

Cabbage is a cool-season crop, thriving in spring and autumn.
Some hardy varieties even survive mild winter frost, improving flavor by increasing sugar content
Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) is a leafy biennial vegetable grown for its dense, round heads. Available in green, red, and savoy varieties, cabbage is a domesticated form of wild Brassica species native to Europe. It has been cultivated for thousands of years and is a staple ingredient in many global cuisines, from coleslaw to kimchi.

Sowing

Start sewing cabbage indoors or directly into the garden
To grow strong cabbage plants, use well-fertilized soil, as cabbage is a heavy feeder.
  • Start seeds indoors or directly in the garden.
  • Sow 1 cm deep with 30-45 cm spacing between plants.
  • Seedlings should be hardened off before transplanting.
  • Cabbage takes up to 180 days to mature, depending on variety.
  • Harvest cabbage when the heads are firm and full-sized. Cut the head at the base, leaving outer leaves to protect regrowth.
  • Some varieties produce small secondary heads after the main one is harvested.
Everything you need

GROWING YOUR FIRST CABBAGE

  • Prefers cool weather – Grows best in spring and autumn, withstanding mild frosts.

  • Takes time to mature – Can take up to 180 days, depending on the variety.

  • Needs spacing – Crowding can lead to small, underdeveloped heads.

  • Heavy feeder – Requires nutrient-rich soil with compost or manure.

  • Prone to pests – Cabbage worms and aphids are common issues; netting helps.

  • Requires even moisture – Dry periods followed by rain can cause splitting.

  • Companion planting helps – Grows well with celery, onions, and herbs.

  • Can be stored long-term – Keeps well in cool, dry places after harvest.
